The management of University of Lagos(UNILAG), has denied reports making the rounds that a Chemistry Education student, identified as Temitope Omolara, slumped and died at the institution’s medical centre.
The female student was said to have returned to the campus after the outing feeling sick, with her friends reporting that she was seen vomiting on a number of occasions.
Temitope was said to have finally died at an undisclosed hospital outside the campus on Thursday. Her remains were buried on Friday.
Details of the circumstances leading to her death still remain fuzzy. The university authority however, on Sunday evening, reacted to a tweet, which alleged that the student had died at the university’s medical centre.
Reports had it that tragedy stuck at the Moremi Hall of the University at the weekend after the student, who was squatting in the hostel, died shortly after returning from an outing with a man, alleged to be her sugar daddy. “It was not long afterwards that she started gasping. We rushed her to the UNILAG Medical Centre, but they blamed the student who allowed her to squat in her room.“Tope eventually died, while the other student is being threatened with eviction.”
But the management of the university said no student died at the centre. A statement from the school’s Deputy Registrar, Information Unit, Mr. Toyin Adebule, made available to the Punch, said Tope died before she was brought to the centre. “I wish to state that the story about the Medical Centre is false. Definitely, the incident did not happen in the medical centre contrary to the claim in the Twitter message.
“Lastly, there is no formal report from the hall to the DSA on the incident. Therefore, no action could have been taken to eject the bona fide student as claimed.
“Let me state categorically here that no student has been ejected from the hall over this matter. At this moment our thoughts are with the family.”
